JAMMED: Over 40,0000 trucks are stranded at Shaktigarh, 45 kms from Singur.
Kolkata: The indefinite dharna by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in front of the TATA Motors Plant in Singur has almost cut off the Delhi-Kolkata road route and thosands of trucks have been stranded for the last four days waiting to enter Kolkata.
Suta Sheikh is driving a truck carrying tea from Guwahati. He has been stuck on the Delhi-Kolkata route of National Highway 2 for over four days now and he loses Rs 300 per day as penalty for not delivering the goods on time.
"I am at a loss. I can't move an inch and there is nothing to eat or drink. Our funds are getting exhausted," says he.
Over 40,0000 trucks are stranded at Shaktigarh, 45 kms from Singur, where Mamata Banerjee is on a dharna outside the TATA Motors' Nano car project. The alternative GT Road too is jammed and patience is wearing thin among the truckers.
A truck driver, Amir Ansari says, "I don't know what to do with my export consignment. It must have been cancelled by now."
And it is not just on the highways. There is panic in the local markets in Kolkata too as the supply of goods from North India have stopped completely.
Due to the huge traffic jam, prices of necessary commodities are also soaring, but no one knows when the Singur deadlock will end.
