NEW HIDEOUT: Intelligence agencies say Mysore is turning out to be a hideout for northeastern rebels.
Bangalore: Six suspected insurgents allegedly affiliated to the People's United Liberation Front (PULF) were late on Sunday arrested by the Manipur police in Mysore.
Wanted for at least a dozen murders, kidnappings and small bomb blasts in Manipur, the six have been remanded to police custody till May 6.
Intelligence agencies say this is the first time northeastern insurgent groups have begun using the south as a hideout.
“They have committed a lot of crimes in Manipur. We had been after the group for last one month,” said SP Imphal (East) Radheshyam.
The six were picked up from a lodge in the heart of the city. Police say Mysore was possibly chosen as a safe haven since it is easy to mingle with the large number of students from northeast India who come to the city to study.
“They first went to Kolkata, then to Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore. They had no plans to attack this place. It was only a meeting place for them,” said Radheshyam.
Mysore has usually been used by Islamic jehadi organisations to operate their sleeper cells.
Earlier this year, ten suspected SIMI activists were arrested in different parts of north Karnataka for allegedly planning to attack Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Just two years back, two suspected terrorists were also arrested in Mysore for allegedly planning to attack the Vikasa Soudha.
