BELIEVE YOU CAN FLY: A UK based commercial pilot, Gautam is also a night club owner and a celebrity manager.
Kolkata: A boy diagnosed with polio, abandoned at the age of three in Kolkata is now a commercial pilot in New Zealand.
After being abandoned, Gautam Dey Lewis was adopted at the age of seven and he has now found freedom and a new life as a commercial pilot.
A UK based commercial pilot, Gautam is also a night club owner and a celebrity manager.
"When my adopted mother took me to Dumdum Airport, I was crying all the way to the airport and as soon as the doors opened I could hear the jet engines. I was amazed,” says Gautam.
He visited his first home, Kolkata's Rehabilitation Centre for Children to inspire the less fortunate children and kindle hope in their hearts.
"I now finally had to gather the courage to return to the city that gave me the chance to live but it is also the city that gave me polio,” says Gautam.
Gautam qualified as pilot in September 2007 from Cranfield Flight Training, where he passed all his ground and air tests in the first attempt in just six-months.
“The fact that a machine can send someone to a new world, I instantly fell in love with airplanes," says Gautam.
Lewis now runs a charitable training school for the physically challenged and hopes to give a flying start in life to these children.
"You get only one shot at life and I have been fortunate to be given a second chance,” says Gautam.
From Gautam Dey to Gautam Lewis it has been 24 long years and Gautam’s take off was from the rehabilitation centre to a fulfilling life where the sky was practically the limit.
