LEFT WITH NO OPTIONS? Many in the Govt are willing to end ties with the Left but Sonia is hesitant.
New Delhi: As the Government flexes its political muscles, it's clear that UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi is already gearing her party for General Elections.
“No coalition government has ever done so many remarkable projects as the UPA has done,” Sonia said while addressing a rally but did not mention the Indo-US nuclear deal.
It seems she doesn't want to make any definite statement when politics at the Centre is so volatile. So, it was left to Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi to give out the Government's emphatic stand on the deal.
“We are not letting down our Prime Minister in any manner,” Dasmunsi told CNN-IBN.
Congress sources have confirmed that the party President is with the Prime Minister on the deal, but while many in the Government are willing to break with the Left Sonia is a bit hesitant.
Few allies have conveyed to Sonia that with inflation on the rise, elections now would be undesirable. Coupled with this is the belief that breaking with the Left would help the NDA, may be not now but in future, when alliance would needed to be cobbled together again.
“We have our difference of opinion on certain economic issues but as far as secular credentials are concerned, they are extremely good,” Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh said.
As always, the final decisions is with Sonia. After painstakingly weaving the alliance, would Sonia like to break with the Left now?
