New Delhi: On a day when the NSG waiver came through, the CPI-M was busy with its two-day politburo meet in Delhi. After the meeting, the Left leaders were unflinching in their criticism of the Manmohan Singh government

“India has de facto accepted the NPT which we haven’t signed so far. If that's the case, it is yet another surrender,” said CPI-M politburo member Sitaram Yechury.

Equally strong was the BJP's criticism. “They have been secretly giving assurances to the US which they havent shared with people of India,” said BJP leader Yashwant Sinha.

Both the BJP and Left demanded immediate calling of Parliament seeking an explanation from the Prime Minister on whether he had agreed to a no testing clause with the US.

UP CM Mayawati, too, joined in the chorus. “We shouldn’t accept a deal that compromises India’s sovereign structure,” she said.

But the Congress's new-found friend came to its rescue. Samajwadi Party had helped the UPA win the crucial trust vote. “The troika of Comrade Karat, Mayawati and LK Advani is an opportunistic alliance that’s opposing for the sake of opposing exposes their politics,” SP leader Amar Singh.

The Congress and UPA are smiling broadly. After all in an election year the waiver gives it a strong calling card.
