HAVING A STROLL: A stray dog on Bangalore's HAL airport's runway caused a plane's nose wheel to collapse on Thursday.
Bangalore: While things have returned to normal after a Kingfisher Airlines aircraft on Thursday hit a dog on the runway at the Bangalore Airport during its takeoff , urgent measures are being taken to contain the animal menace on the runway.
Dog catching squad at the old airport in Bangalore on Friday rounded up stray dogs in the airport’s vicinity. Several passengers were stranded after the accident caused the Hyderabad-bound plane's nose landing gear to collapse.
“It is most unfortunate that the dog menace at Airports in India still persists and that an incident occurred today in Bangalore," Chairman and CEO Kingfisher Airlines Vijay Mallya said in a statement issued to the media soon after the accident.
If the incident wasn't enough, an eyewitness blamed the ground staff for not handling the crisis well.
“What I found a little uncomfortable as a frequent flier was the inability of the ground staff to handle the crisis of this kind. The other thing was it took a good half an hour for the security to allow us to come back into the terminal because they did not have the clearance to allow passengers to get back in," a troubled passenger R Ganpati said.
The dog menace has not even spared the city's new international airport. There have been reports of dog straying on to the runway during test flights at the BIAL earlier this month. As for the old airport, it is slated to shut down for commercial flights once the new airport becomes operational.
Airport authorities are protesting its closure, but this incident has put the HAL in troubled waters again.
