Shantiniketan (West Bengal): Peace is shattered in Shantiniketan after yet another shocking instance of campus violence.

In Visva Bharati, a third year undergraduate student of music with Sangeet Bhavan, Saswati Pal, was shot dead by an outsider.

Her assailant, Amaresh Kundu, was known to her. She was shot at Ananda Sadan, the ladies' hostel where Saswati stayed.

"We are looking into how it happened. The SP will come over, I’m in touch with him,” says Samit Roy, Visva Bharati registrar.

Kundu shot himself after killing Saswati and is currently in a critical condition at Sian sub-divisional hospital in Burdwan.

Kundu has been identified as the personal driver of a senior police officer with the Tollygunge police station in Kolkata.

The offender stole the .32 Calibre service revolver belonging to a constable at the same police station.

"We have asked the Additional Commissioner of the Detective Department to make a detailed inquiry and submit a report,” said Kolkata Police Commissioner, Goutam Mohan Chakraborty.

This isn't the first time that the Visva Bharati campus witnessed a serious breach of security.

Apart from stray incidents of campus violence, Tagore's Nobel medallion was also stolen in March, 2004. Meanwhile, students have called for a class boycott on Monday.
