Domi Village (Maharashtra): Babu Rao's lit torch is his first and only source of light as his village Domi has never had electricity.

But thanks to a team of students from Colorado College in US who've taken up the task of luminating the village, Babu's family will now dispel darkness for good.

“It wasn't nice to study in the dark. Now it’s good,” says a local, Nisha.

All 67 houses of the village have been fitted with solar LED lights and the students have really worked hard for this noble cause.

“We all did personal fund raising to raise money for the trip and then we did fund raising as a group. I personally wrote letters to people I knew telling them about the trip and asking them to donate for project supplies,” said a student of Colorado College in the US, Jessy Patric.

“We went to each home and sort of turned on the light to let them see what it would be like and they were very surprised,” said another student of the college, Timothy.

The students are now making sure that they leave behind a system which is rather self-reliant.

The villagers now have a gram kosh in place where each household is to deposit Rs 75 a month.

Out of that amount, Rs 40 will be used for the welfare of the village, Rs 25 for maintenance of batteries and Rs 10 as salary for the three lady operators who will be in-charge of the lights.

This would amount to half the amount they were spending on their kerosene lamps.

The tribal village of Domi has seen light for the first time and it has been made possible only by the efforts of students from US who have generated funds and come all the way to bring smiles on the faces of many.

They have reached a place where the government has failed to reach or perhaps not bothered to reach.
