New Delhi: Tabla maestro Pandit Kishan Maharaj died in Varanasi late on Sunday night after a brief illness. He was 84.

Pt Maharaj had suffered a paralytic attack on April 29 that rendered the right side of his body immobile. He had been admitted to a private hospital in Varanasi since.

The octogenarian maestro was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2002 and was one of the finest musicians in the country.

His ability to play cross rhythms, particularly in tihai patterns made him one of the most respected and popular Tabla players .

He was versatile and comfortable playing with all kinds of accompaniments, including the Sitar, the Sarod or renditions like Dhrupad and Dhamar and even dance.
