Tara Publishing wins international award

BIG WIN: Tara Publishing's The Night Life of Trees has been awarded at the Bologna Children's Book Fair.
Chennai: Tara Publishing house won an international award at the world's biggest children's books fair, and what started out as a small children's publishing house that has transformed into an award-winning enterprise.
Now Tara Publishing whose books have gone global over the past 14 years, is a small editorial team, whose handmade books really set them apart.
Books like The Night Life of Trees is one of four books to win an award at the on going Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy one of the leading such fairs in the world.
Tara Publishing's Sirish Rao says, "We published it as an art book but didn't know at the time that it would make this big an impact. And then straight off we go and get the world's biggest children's book award, which is very nice and very surprising."
"What we have are essentially artists' books which are handmade, and very expensive, costing about $100, which we are specially making for the mass market," says Tara Publishing's Gita Wolff.
The Night Life of Trees taps into Gond tribal folklore. They're numbered editions, and a little steep at Rs 950, but it's worth the price if the effort to make even one page is kept in mind, the process to make even a single page is quite tedious.
