New Delhi: Controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen says she may leave India for a few months for her medical treatment abroad. Taslima has been living in India for the past four years but was shifted out of Kolkata late last year after protests against her writings.

"I could not endure it anymore," IANS quoted Taslima as saying. "I am leaving because there is no other option left for me," she said after meeting officials at the External Affairs Ministry.

While she did not specify where she was planning to go, Taslima said: "There are many countries ready to welcome me."

The author, who now lives in a safe house near Delhi due to security concerns, has been complaining of medical problems for some time now.

She has also expressed unhappiness over the kind of treatment she has received in Delhi.

Taslima says she has been completely cut off from the world and would love to go back to Kolkata. The MEA has, however, turned down her request.

Taslima has already been granted an extension of her residency permit but the government says it's unable to redress her grievance of loneliness and that she cannot be allowed to return to Kolkata because there are too many security concerns.

While extending her visa in February, the government told her that she must ensure that she is sensitive to India's traditions and its secular ethos.
