New Delhi: A week before Teacher's Day is celebrated in India, a lady teacher of well-known girls school in the Capital is in the limelight for all the wrong reasons.

A sting operation conducted by a Hindi news channel had shown Uma Khurana, a Mathematics teacher at the Government Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya at Aruna Asaf Ali Marg in New Delhi, running a sex racket.

The channel expose showed how the teacher forced students into prostitution and pornography.

Following the report, an angry mob gathered on Asaf Ali Marg, outside the school on Thursday.

After parents and locals gathered outside the school and torched a police vehicle in protest, school authorities suspended the teacher.

Nine persons including two policemen and a local councillor were injured in the clash outside the school as the parents demanded action against the teacher.

"Madam Khurana should be handed over to the public and we will mete her justice ourselves. We will not spare her and the others involved in it," said Neelam, mother of a Class 5 student.

"We can't believe what was shown on the television. The matter should be thoroughly probed by a judicial magistrate," said another angry parent Rajesh Kumar.

Police had to resort to tear gas shelling to control the mob and Rapid Action Force was also deployed to bring the situation under control.

The Deputy Speaker of Delhi Assembly, Shoaib Iqbal, said that it was natural that the parents would react violently to the report. He has appealed for calm.

Yeh school ke samne saare log rehte hain aur ye inhi logon ki bacchiyaan hai. Jab in logon ko pata laga to swabhabhik hai ki jo school aur shikshak samaj ko sudharne ka kaam karte hain yeh karte hain to yeh sab to swabhawik hai (The students are from the neighbouring areas and it is but natural when the parents learn that teachers are indulging in such immoral and illegal activities)," Shoaib Iqbal said.

Uma was later arrested by Delhi Police.

"We have detained the accused and are investigating the matter. We will also be asking the news channel for tapes for further investigations," a senior police official said.

"At present our priority is to maintain law and order, so we can't say anything about the matter," the official added.
