Kashmir: In Jammu and Kashmir 10 Army jawans were killed in an Improvised Explosive Device attack on their convoy on the Srinagar-Baramulla Highway.

The powerful explosion ripped through the army bus, as it was moving in a convoy just outside Srinagar. The convoy was going to Chokibal which is the last civilian post before the Line of Control.

"It was a transient carrying bus. Transients are generally unarmed. The bus itself is protected to some extent as we do apply some armour plating. The direction of the explosion is more directed towards the side of the vehicle. So it is not that it is a very large explosion but it is an explosion that has been placed very effectively," Brigadier KA Muthanna explained.

The attack is the worst on the Army in the last five years. Kashmir-based terror organisation Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Hizbul had been lying dormant for a while because of pressure from the security forces. With this attack, it is asserting its relevance in Kashmir ahead of elections.

Triggering blasts through improvised devices has been the preferred method terrorists have used to attack the Army and 50 per cent of casualties suffered by the Army in Jammu and Kashmir have been because of IEDs.

In the last one month there has been an increase in the attacks on the Army and other security forces.

There has also been an increase in cross-border infiltration in the Kupwara and Rajouri sectors.

Over the last few months, the Army has been highlighting increased infiltration attempts across the LoC, linking this to elections in the state later this year.
