New Delhi: Muslim students at the Ranchi University turned violent over a question that was asked in their MA History exam.

Students allege that the question was an insult to Prophet Mohammad as it refers to the Prophet as a 'businessman' and a 'raider' in his early days.

The question — for the second year post graduation — pertained to the 'career' of Prophet Mohammad in his early days.

Muslim students appearing for the exam attacked the University office in protest.

The police had to lathi charge to control the protesting students. Nearly a dozen students have now been arrested

Student Leader of the Ranchi University, Shamsher Alam said, "The police treated us very badly. However, what we want right now is that the person who set the paper should be arrested."

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister, Madhu Koda has directed Ranchi University Vice Chancellor, A A Khan to inquire into the question paper scandal.

Koda said he would talk to the university authorities and urge them to initiate action against the question paper-setters.

He expressed concern over the issue, saying such an act could hurt the sentiments of a community and affect communal harmony. Meanwhile, the University administration cancelled the History examination and set up a committee to inquire into the matter.

Various Muslim organisations also condemned the incident and demanded immediate action against the culprit.
