Mumbai: The countdown to CAT 2006 has begun, and even though this year entry norms have become tougher, applications have gone up to 20 per cent.

More than 1,90,000 people will take CAT this year to get into the IIMS. And experts say it is not only the number of test takers that has gone up, but also the quality of aspirants taking the exam for the first time.

Only those students with minimum 50 per cent marks in graduation will be allowed to take the test.

Experts say that the number of candidates with work experience who are taking CAT this year has gone up by more than 20 per cent as compared to last year. This, they say, is also going to make it tougher to bell the CAT 2006.

“A candidate with work experience is more mature and also the chances that he has taken cat before are more,” says education consultant, Manish Jain.

The only sigh of relief is the extra half an hour students will get to write the exam this year.

However, how much of a relief this will bring, will only be clear on the date the test is held, depending on the number of questions and their difficulty level.
