There's only one France for me: Sarkozy

VICTORY TIME: Right wing leader Nicolas Sarkozy has been elected French President.
New Delhi: France has a new President. Right wing leader Nicolas Sarkozy defeated Socialist rival Segolene Royal in the final round of polls.
Right wing leader Nicolas Sarkozy has been elected French President. Sarkozy, the leader of the conservative Union for a Popular Movement party, defeated Socialist rival Segolene Royal in the final round of polls, which saw a record 85 per cent voter turnout.
The final count gave Sarkozy 53.06 per cent, compared with 46.94 per cent for Royal. Sarkozy pledged to be president of all the French.
Sarkozy said, “My thoughts go to all the French who did not vote for me. I want to say to them that outside of political combat, outside of divergent opinions, that there is only one France for me.''
France's 44.5 million voters were faced with a clear left-right choice between Sarkozy's tough line on immigration, and Royal's soft line on welfare. Royal stepped up almost immediately to concede defeat& said she is ready continue the battle.
Royal said, "We will continue to assemble, to unite, to talk to each other, to prepare the tomorrows of a France that will end-up choosing a real desire for a future."
By opting for Sarkozy over Royal, French voters have in effect let go the chance to have their first woman President.
