New Delhi: The political endgame is being played out in Uttar Pradesh. CNN-IBN has learnt that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has begun legal consultations to look into the possibility of stepping down.

Meanwhile, the UPA Government at the Centre is seriously considering President's rule in the state. They have taken key ally, CPM, into confidence over this. But for the moment, the Left seems opposed to the idea.

Acting under pressure from the UP leadership the Congress on Saturday began exploring options for imposing President’s rule in Uttar Pradesh two days back the SC disqualified 13 BSP MLA's who had come over from the BSP to the ruling Samajwadi party in 2003. In Lucknow the chorus for Article 356 is growing louder.

BSP chief Mayawati said, “He should resign on moral grounds. Otherwise the Governor should dismiss him like it happened in 1995.”

With leaders like Salman Khurshid, president of the UP Congress Committee, pressing on senior leaders of the party met on Saturday to discuss the pros and the cons of enforcing President’s rule on the eve of the election commission finalising the poll dates.

Salman Khurshid said, “This government is illegal, must go, not elected, never had majority. SC said they got majority by illegal means. We understand allies have to be carried along. They are against elected government being dismissed, but this case is different.”

The Congress leaders invited CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat for consultations. Karat told them that his party believes in the Bommai Judgement which means that the party having majority in the legislature cannot be thrown out.

But consultations are on and the Congress leadership will meet other UPA allies in the near future.

Mulayam proved his government’s majority in the UP Assembly on January 25. The House will next meet on February 26.
