Chennai: Two couples, a Hindu and a Muslim, claiming parentage of a male infant, told a court on Monday that they would accept a DNA test verdict in the dispute.

K Kamakshi and Barkat Begum, both 24, staked claims to the male child and disowned a female newborn delivered by one of them Sunday.

According to the Police, the confusion arose following wrong tagging of the infants by nurses. Three hospital staff employed at a maternity hospital in Royapuram, situated in the northern suburbs, were suspended on Sunday.

But the two mothers' claims and counter-claims reached such levels that the Police and the Tamil Nadu government were forced to intervene to prevent any communal tension in the area.

K Ilango and M Ansari, the respective husbands of the two women, told Police officials that they would submit to DNA fingerprinting and accept its eventual verdict.

To avoid future legal complications, these undertakings were recorded in a magistrate's court, the Police officials told IANS.

Both unnamed male and female infants have B positive blood group, hospital sources told IANS.

The DNA fingerprinting was underway at the Tamil Nadu Forensic Sciences Laboratory following extraction of blood samples from the parents and the two infants, Police sources added.

The results will be known next Monday
