SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN: This is the third round of United Nations' sanctions on Tehran.
New Delhi: The UN Security Council has approved fresh sanctions against Iran for its controversial uranium enrichment programme
The 15-member Council approved the sanctions with 14 affirmative votes on Monday, which Indonesia stayed away from.
This is the third round of UN sanctions on Tehran, but the first when trade in goods with both military and civilians uses have been banned.
The resolution also authorises inspection of shipment to and from Iran and freezes the assets of many companies and individuals linked to Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programme.
Iran, which claims its uranium enrichment programme is for peaceful purposes, rejected the resolution, calling it politically motivated.
Iranian Ambassador to the UN, Mohammad Khazaee says, "The international community is once again witnessing that the credibility of the Security Council, whose primary responsibility is to maintain international peace and security, is readily downgraded to a mere tool of the international foreign policy of just a few countries."
