LAST DAY: There was a quiet farewell at AIIMS for the man who had spent 49 years of his life at AIIMS.
New Delhi: The country's premier medical college and hospital - All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - on Wednesday bid a fond farewell to their director and one of India's best known cardiac surgeons Dr. P Venugopal.
The last leg of Dr. Venugopal's term though made the headlines for his face off with Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss.
But on his last day as the Director of AIIMS, Dr. P Venugopal was in no mood to complain.
He said, "If reborn, I'd like to come back and serve AIIMS."
The shy director made headlines due to his differences with Dr. Ramadoss who called him a bad administrator. But it is Dr. Venugopal who has had the last laugh.
"I don't care what they say," was all he said about the statement made by the Health Minister.
The faculty and resident doctors who have backed him through thick and thin say that even after Venugopal's retirement they will not allow the Health Minister to get a free hand in running AIIMS.
There was a quiet farewell at AIIMS for the man who had spent 49 years of his life at AIIMS.
After Dr. Venugopal's exit, doctors are hoping that the Prime Minister's Office will pick the new director and not the Health Minister who had a running battle with the former director.
