DOC BOWS OUT: Venugopal reminisces on his time at AIIMS and his plans.
New Delhi: Director of the All India Institute of Medical Science, Dr P Venugopal, completed his tenure on Wednesday and will be retire as the head of the institute.
Speaking exclusively with CNN-IBN, Venugopal reminisced on his time at AIIMS and his plans.
Growing up with AIIMS
“I came to institute in 1959 and was the third one to join. At that time, the institute had just one block where we are sitting right now. We did not have a hospital and would go to Safdarjung to lend medicines and see patients. Then we started a hospital of out own in the nurses' hostel. Subsequently we developed this hospital in 1967. The most satisfying thing is to see the institute grow leaps and bounds. AIIMS has been rated as no. 1 for the last ten years, not only nationally but internationally.
No regrets
I am very happy I got a sense of satisfaction and if I’m reborn I’ll come back and serve the institute.
Future plans
After spending 50 years, you develop the habit of serving poor people and suffering humanity. That will be in your blood and you will continue to do that kind of work.
