New York: Citigroup's CEO Vikram Pandit will have to juggle quite a few big numbers at his new job, but he's equally at ease dealing with big numbers on the home front.

Earlier in 2007, Vikram Pandit shelled out nearly $18 million for an apartment. The Beresford, a landmark residential building on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

His neighbors in the luxury building include the likes of comedian Jerry Seinfeld and tennis ace John McEnroe.

Pandit's purchase in September was one of the high profile real estate deals of the year in New York and Maria Pashby, real estate broker at the Corcoran Group Maria Pashby, who handled the deal, was impressed with his approach.

She declined to be interviewed on camera, but described the negotiation in an email message:

"I had another Buyer but both the Seller and I felt that the Pandits were the right family. Mr Pandit was so decisive, gave me what I asked for. Within 14 hours, when I asked him for his word, he said he could guarantee the following: "I never start without finishing".

Pandit's leadership qualities were also what impressed New York based non-profit breakthrough to give him their inaugural Inspiration award in October, according to Mallika Dutt, founder and executive director of Breakthrough.

Dutt said, “Most of the folks I know on Wall Street are very much in your face, pretty aggressive, pretty loud, make their presence felt. With Vikram, he makes you feel comfortable instantly. At the same time you know that he is a very major player, a heavyweight in this whole field, in Wall Street.”

Wall Street's Mr Nice Guy, quick and decisive, with a head for numbers - Vikram Pandit will have to live up to his reputation to pull out Citigroup from its current financial crisis.
