Welcome Diwali, goodbye dengue?
New Delhi: With 89 fresh cases of dengue, two more dead and more than 1800 still in hospital, the situation isn't getting any better but it's not getting worse either.
At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the number of patients with dengue has been around 175 for more than a week.
Meanwhile, the number of patients coming in with the viral fever is also falling. But doctors are quick to warn against any premature optimism.
"The cases have come down but the outbreak isn't over,” said Medical Superintendent at AIIMS, D K Sharma.
AIIMS had an unexpected guest on Thursday with the Union Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav paying RJD MP Shahabuddin a visit, who's recovering from a spinal operation.
Not surprisingly, Laloo had his own suggestions on how to deal with the outbreak.
“Stay alert, and squash the mosquito when you see it!” suggested Laloo.
And though the numbers are still rising and the queues at the hospitals just as long, there is some hope on Delhi's horizon.
"Delhi received some rains today, so it's good because the mosquito needs high temperatures," said Sharma.
With Diwali around the corner, Delhiites will be hoping the change of season which the festival marks will bring down the number of cases.
The Aedes mosquito doesn't survive in temperatures below 22 degrees, so this year's winter will be a very welcome one.
