Brussels: UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was recently in Brussels to celebrate the Festival of India and along the way she also picked up a couple of awards.
Sonia was presented with the Order of Leopold, the second highest civilian award of Belgium and an honorary doctorate from the University of Brussels.
"I do believe that by conferring these distinctions you are recognising not the individual that I am but the values that I have imbibed by which I try and live my life," said Sonia.
Along with the Prime Minister of Belgium, Sonia was present to inaugurate an exhibition of 200 rare works of art collected from 27 different museums in India.
The exhibition titled Tejas is the highlight of the ongoing Festival of India in Belgium.
"It is a qualitatively new threshold in terms of cultural diplomacy and what we seek to project what the world is interested in," said Director General of India Council of Cultural Relations, Pawan K Verma.
The festival, which began on the October 7 will feature various facets of Indian dance, drama, music and cinema.
"Centre for Fine Arts which is one of the biggest cultural institutions in Belgium, only focuses on one country and takes us through the journey of sculpture, dance and cinema,” said Director of Communications, Bozar, Leena Gysen.
It has been twenty years since a festival of this magnitude has come to Europe. Brussels, over the next three months, will be filled with sights and sounds of India.
