Raja Thrivkram While it atrocious on the side of the rulers to even think of a gag on the media and tv channels, the UPA rule reminds one of the autocratic ways of Indira Priyadarshini, in its hasty decision making process.
At the same time, media and tv channels are also to take the blame squarely for this action ill directed one at the tv channels, for their own follies the reportage.
Even in debating the issue, Sagarika as anchor was immature to shriek at her top of the voice with the minister forgetting ethics of a good debater,as if the child in her has lost the lollipop in her hand. !
TV channels driven by sole criteria of making money at all costs, being irrelevant to real news, debates being the platforms for anti-social elements to sell their wares, freedom of press is not to be licencious to peddle the wares of hate and communal polarisation.
Many anchors and reporters have exhibited some part of their biased psyche in their reportage, may be to prove their "secular" credentials being psuedo seculars, thus imposing their views than the reportage of news.
The worst example of a bad debate is that of sanjay dutt and the one conducted by rajdeep in this channel where unfettered freedom was to use the occassion to propagate hate, undermine judiciary, ridicule the honest cop, by a so called social activist who has doubtable character and credibilty as the spokesperson of faith and every time she seems to be aware of miseries of only one faith followers.
If the media takes sides with criminals in the society and helps the anti-socials in society as the breaking stories of criminals getting away, builds opinion for money power of the celebrities, then media which is held in reverence for their self regulation shows the slip is exhibited, that some thing rotten is happening in the editors room to seek moolah, not the reportage of happening incidents impartially.
Judiciary and journalism are respected as they are percieved to be honest. They have to be.

mkbajaj The show anchored by Sagarika ghosh last Night was a farce. She did not allow Abhishek singhvi to put his point across and the other lady[sister of arun shourie] was simply hysterical and less said the better about that chap who is known for his NamaskAAAAAAAR[imported from Aaj Tak].Sagarika was at her worst---as always---- does she think that no one except the press people should have EGO?

raj MEDIA deserve it. They ve played enough GAME of biasness. They ve done enough to appease CONGRESS MEN & WOMEN. Its always been true that if you pamper someone, they can get back to you. Media has DANCED enough in the TUNE of CONGRESS & UPA and criticised NDA everytime. Now is the time to look back in time and start analyzing CONGRESS party's History. Hope this will open eye of MEDIA.

Girish UPA govt has always used private broadcasters to its advantage when ever there were scams involving opposition parties. There is no doubt that it manipulated media to its advantage during last general elections where "India Shining" campaign was used against NDA. UPA very well knows that it is not always possible to be in good books of media people and they want to have a backup plan. So next time a channel decides to air sting operation involving some one from congress, they will be stopped with this new law.

aditya the media is reacting hysterically to the proposed bill. the conduct of media houses in recent years has lead to this situation and they have themselves to blame. privacy and dignity of several individuals has been violated in the name of public interest. trespassing with electronic gadgetry in tow and later scandalizing the person involved has become a norm. this has also involved blackmail at the worst and things other than so called public interest.responsible journalism requires knowledge , honesty and hardwork. one does not need gadgetry and stuff.

Vinay SHetty Though the section of media is crossing the line, I strongly feel that this bill should not be passed in parliment.there should be a commitee of senior journalist who should control media and not the governoment. THIS BILL SHOULD BE OPPOSED

Abi No doubt Media is the biggest enemy for all the corrupt Politicians. In desperate attempt this is their tactic to curb the Media menace. At one side the Govt tries to show its transparancy by introducing the RTI rule and on the other hand the same Govt is trying to restrict media not to telecast the real facts and corruptions inside the Political fraternity. This is not fair.

Puneet Kumar Gupta The political class is again taking a step towards protecting themselves in the name of national security etc by introducing this bill.

National security is a valid concern but keeping sting operations under scrutiny is partially correct. In the past media should have been more responsible by managing the quality of the content they show to general public. For example, making sting operations into the personal lives of celebrities is not appropriate but on the other side sting operations for exposing the corruption etc is well justified. There shouldn't be any strict control over the media except for the coverage relating to national security. Rest of the things should be left on the conscience of media. Indian media is loosing its grounds of true journalism and becoming over commercialized. Most of the news channels are not worth watching even for a minute but on the other side few news channels are still trying to deliver the quality content.

I think the sting operations in the past exposing the deep rooted corruption in the political class is the main inspiration for such a bill.

But the question is who is going to define the things that come under national security?
