VACANT THRONE? Leadership issues are returning to haunt the BJP again.
New Delhi: Who is to take over the reigns after After Atal Bihari Vajpayee? Leadership issues are returning to haunt the BJP again. The party has gone back to its favourite agenda of Hindutva to use it as a poll plank, however there are issues of leadership and factionalism within, which remain unattended.
The first day of the party’s national executive meeting in Bhopal was supposed to prepare an imminent mid-term poll strategy. But the key issue remained the tussle over party leadership especially the controversy surrounding former party president Lal Krishna Advani.
“Advani is the tallest leader after Vajpayee and hence is the natural choice for the post of the prime minister,” said BJP leader Jaswant Singh.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee could not attend the meet on health grounds, but in a missive, the former Prime Minister created flutters as he complained of the siege within and expressed confidence that he would soon be in the midst of the partymen
“I don’t think anybody can question Advani’s credibility,” said BJP Leader Bangaru Laxman.
The known ‘Advani adversaries’ who won’t give up easily. Former party president Murli Manohar Joshi for one is all set to introduce the resolution on the Ram Setu controversy in the executive meet on Saturday. Not conceding political space to Advani to become party's face for this crucial campaign. Similarly the stakes for the incumbent president Rajnath Singh are also high.
