Noida: The UP police have already come in for criticism for their initial handling of the Noida double murder case.

Now the release of Dr Rajesh Talwar is even more embarrassing for the police who had earlier maligned the reputations of both Arushi and her father in a press conference.

Inspector General of Police, Meerut range, Gurdarshan Singh had claimed that extra-marital affair was the reason behind the killings of Arushi and Hemraj.

"The doctor's extra-marital affair was known to both the girl and Hemraj. The two used to discuss this and had come close. Dr Rajesh could not tolerate this even though his own character was not good," Gurdarshan had stated confidentally in a press conference after Noida Police arrested Dr Talwar.

"On May 15 Dr Rajesh came home and found his daughter and Hemraj in an objectionable position but not in a compromising position. Dr Rajesh took Hemraj to the terrace and killed him. He than drank whiskey and killed Arushi," he had claimed.

So it remains to be seen whether the Talwars are going to file a defamation suit against the UP police.

Dr Rajesh lawyer Pinaki Mishra was not forthcoming on legal action against the media and the UP police.

"From day one the Noida police had no proof against Dr Talwar. In any other society there would be serious repercussions for incarcerating someone without proof. But in our society, I doubt it. Defamation case is pointless in India as it takes decades to solve such cases. This calls for introspection of UP police," Mishra said.

Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Choudhary said, "It is a complete travesty of justice. A lot of hysteria was aroused. The cops bungled and we have lost confidence. A young girl was defamed. Talwars should sue the police for mental agony and torture. I have already asked for the suspension of the concerned police official."

"How can the police personnel not see things staring in their eyes? They have carried out a character assassination of two normal people. I don't think that any thing compensates the agony that the parents have gone through. The parents have suffered a loss of reputation," she added.
