Women on a high as SC allows them to bartend

PLEASED AS A PUNCH: Anukrita Pradhan, a trained bartender, is all smiles after the Supreme Court on Thursday passed a judgement allowing women to bartend in the capital.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday overruled Delhi government’s order that disallowed women in the capital to bartend.
Anukrita Pradhan, a trained bartender, is as pleased as a punch about the news. For this 25 year old, juggling, mixing and serving drinks is the stuff dream jobs are made of.
However, because of Delhi government’s order, she had been working at one of the restaurants of the city’s leading five-star hotel, Maurya Sheraton.
Anukrita says, I see that my dreams are coming true.”
As Anukrita hones her rustic skills, the Delhi government is discussing what to do with the latest Supreme Court ruling. All this while, the state government’s contention has been that men in Delhi can not hold their drinks and therefore it is unsafe for women to bartend.
Finance Minister, Delhi A K Walia says, “We need to discuss the issue with cabinet colleagues and then decide on the matter. With other places, there may not be such a big problem, but Delhi's situation is slightly different.”
Most bar owners in the city agree with the Finance Minister’s viewpoint. They say that taking a woman on as a bartender is just not worth the risk.
Owner, Gola Restaurant, Ankur Kapoor says, “People come and they act decent in the beginning, but two drinks down they start misbehaving with women. We don’t want any of those problems around here.”
Interestingly enough, though the legal age to drink in Delhi is 25 but the Court has allowed 21 year olds to work as bartenders.
