The Findings of the IBN-HT Poll reported are based on the State of the Nation Survey conducted in 29 states of the country in the second week of January 2006. The survey was conducted at 956 locations spread across 230 Parliamentary constituencies. During the survey 28,560 people were approached of which 15,141 respondents could be interviewed.
The sample for the survey was drawn using a multi state stratified random sampling technique. The sample of respondents was drawn from the electoral rolls of the sampled polling booths.
The fieldwork of the survey was conducted between January 7-14, 2006. The respondents were interviewed in the face-to-face situation at their place of residence using a structured questionnaire in the language spoken by the respondent. An additional set of questions was administered to Muslim respondents selected in the sample apart from the main questionnaire.
CNN-IBN State of the Nation poll aims at restoring the credibility of opinion polls in the country. The decision to invite the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), one of the leading social science research institutions of the country, to carry out this poll reflects this commitment.
We believe that transparency in survey methodology is essential to restoring public faith in opinion polls and forecasts. We report below detailed information on the sampling technique, profile of the achieved sample and the reserach team that carried out the survey. Those interested in further information or any clarification are welcome to write to the director of Survey, Mr Sanjay Kumar at sanjay@csdsdelhi.org
