N.Anand Rao Pakistan needs a new constitution . Its only then we can expect something in Pakistan. As long as the army has a say in the Govt, nothing could work.It took Indian Govt less then 60 years after independence to change its attitude from being a State governed TV, Education,Industry and so on to make them all open. Thats because we Indians had an inkling to expand and move on and the Govt was a facilitator. It did not intervene. Whereas in Pakistan, this is not the case. People want a change, but army having a say in the ruling of the country, peoples interest is not looked into. With the present constitution Pakistan has no progress can be achieved.

Naagmani This is the first article by Vidya Shankar Aiyer I read. Honestly it was the surname, that egged me to read.. haha. Pakistan is caught in a web of super-power politics since its inception. It was basically carved out by the British to serve as a small base to monitor Russia and China. The masses were taken for a ride. Muslim masses were fooled in 1947 (Islam in Danger), while Hindu Masses were fooled in 1992 (Hindutva - Ram Janmabhoomi - Shalinyas - Rath Yatra). Yes, masses indeed are fools... thats why the Mullah and the RSS survives and thrives.

India survived because of Nehru's Vision. Had it taken the RSS vision, India would have balkanised long back. So, stand up and salute Nehru., the architect of Modern India.

Nehru's contribution to India's stability and growth is a million times more than Mahatma Gandhi's. (Sorry, but that is the truth). Nehru built INSTITUTIONS... Nehru built the FOUNDATIONS... the intellectual land-scape of IDEAS... which were so modern and forward looking... that they gave India stability and some roots of democracy.

Yes., people like Shiv Sena and Narendra Modi do get elected in India's democracy (unfortunately)... but then., the mechanism will correct itself. Gujaratis will see the fraud they are being played on... if not today., after 5 or 10 years. Time will expose Merchants of Hatred. Time is a merciless enemy (Bapu's line).

Nagarajan A good analysis. Pakistan needs radical change the way they want to govern. As long as they hold on the tag of "Islamic Reguplic", whether ruled by politicians or military, the prospects remains bleak. India has been able to make steady progress because majority of us give no place to regligious fundamentalism. They have to follow either ours or China's policy for betterment of poor Pakistanis.

Karavadi Raghava Rao This is like a loosing battle. The Remedy may prove worse than the disease. There is crisis of identity between Sindh region,Phaktoon Afghan Region and Punjab region Besides Talibans and militants are in control of many pockets through out the country as the violent incidents that are being reported from to time. Will these Democratic politicians with their internal rivalries, mutual hatred and selfish interests control these elements.History may repeat and pave the way for a new dictator or Pakistan may face the the problem of survival as a Nation that is make to break.
