Srivathsa The comment seems to almost blame the farming sector for making India look less shining - even if it were not meant to sound that way.

The agricultural sector is in bad shape. India needs to improve farm productivity and the lot of farmers. Each suicide needs to be seen as an act of extreme desperation.

If after 60 years of independence and 16 years of liberalization, we still have this situation, it should be considered a failure of the Indian state to protect its most vulnerable section.

Global wheat shortages are looming large. India needs to have another green revolution quickly

Sriram Laxman Why is PC just spelling out the problem. His job is to provide solution to the problem. Yes we have problem in farm sector, so what is his plan to stimulate that sector?

Sathyadev This title chosen by CNN-IBN (Farm sector hurting overall growth: Chidambaram) was little off the mark, considering that PC is from Congress party, the same party to which Gandhiji belonged ("India lives in its villages").

This food situation didnt emerge in a day. May be if various steps had been taken in the past, it might have helped. Examples: (1) sales models of shorter length
where the levels of middle men are reduced; ensuring the food growers get maximum benefit (2) Understanding of various agricultural models in various states / regions of India, and to popularise the successful ones elsewhere. (3) Sufficient rural level initiatives to help & encourage people increase food output. Assistance from govt / rural body in various ways for this. (4) Structured land reforms. Also to ensure that there is a degree of uniformity in land allocation to the new land owners.
