1. Grameen Bank is an institution which provides money as loan with terms that people will repay the amount plus interest. People are aware of the conditions at the time of taking loans. The Bank gives loan without any collateral - this is a unique policy. Also Bank's people go to debtor’s premises to get back the weekly installment. Which Bank in the world does this sort of services to people? Forget amount interest rates - when someone needs money for his baby birth, survive in life - no one pay help but Grameen Bank in such an unconditional way.
2. There may be many cases where people could not come out of poverty cycle but there are cases also, where people have come out of poverty by taking micro-credit loans. I am not talking about Grameen Bank alone.
3. As people are bound to repay the money, so some people try hard to be honest and work hard to clear his/her loans. That makes people to be depended on own works and earnings slowly and they don't ask help from others eventually.
4. Previously village people are used to take loan from "Mahajan" and repay them in double in just 3 or, 4 months. If they could not repay the double amount money, people had to work under Mahajan without wages as slaves to repay the loan. At least micro-credit makes people a bit free to choose to repay the loan with his/her own way without making him/her slaves.

It's very unfortunate that the corrupt leaders in Bangladesh for the last few decades has not only make the country economically poor but also trying to make the people mentally sick. Otherwise the former prime minister and leader of one the largest political group could not make such a defametory comments. The comments made by Sheik Hasina or her supporters actually shows the meanness of their mind.It would do no harm to Dr. Yonus. Is it so easy to have a noble prize? Sheikh Hasina, you were the prime minister and you could manage that time to buy so many Ph.D. Why did not you try for the noble prize at that time? When Dr. Younus was pioneering to build the organization with his own money from Jobra village then where were the true friends??? of the poor people. I would ask all sick people to learn how to appreciate a good work that is aimed for the betterment of the poor people in Bangladesh and ultimately for the prosperity of the nation.

You are right. I agree with you.

Unfortunately, political leaders of Bangladesh are not used to do intelligent and constructive criticism. Is the Nobel Peace Prize is so simple to grab? Why a big mouth like Hasina doesn’t bring one such glory to her country? The reality is destructive people like Hasina and Khaleda are sucking blood of Bangladesh. How a former prime minister like Hasina could quote such ill words about a person and an enterprise that made world attention to a country like Bangladesh. These blood sucker politicians are ruining everything. I am not advocating Dr. Yunus or Grameen Bank. There are possibilities of mishaps in such large organization which have million members. The author of the article should place his evidence (Halima and Noornahar) to Grameen Bank and concerned authority of Bangladesh government for verification. The authentic evidence also should send to Nobel Peace Committee so that they could revise their judgment!!! Mr. Sumon K Chakrabarti, we hope your article is not another pessimistic propaganda against a struggling nation by the help of cowards like Sheikh Hasina and Shariyar Kabir.
( Posted: Tuesday , June 05, 2007 at 03:54 )
well, mr shariyar kabir is definitely noty a coward. if you refresh your memory, you will find that he was arrested by the khaleda zia-led govt for doing a documentary on minority torture and was himself tortured. also, hasina is definitely not a coward. how can you call hasian a coward when all she has seen throughout her life is dead bodies---from father, mother to close ones??
( Posted by sumon on )
How cay you be so sure? Most of the Bangladeshi politicians and their bootlickers like S. Kabir s are not only cowards but also greedy, notorious and ferocious. Yes my memory is very much fresh and I know that inhuman activities like minority torture happened during the starting of Khalada’s 2nd term regime. And of course I can clearly recall that instead of standing strongly against such cruelty Awami league leaders was fleeing. At that time they were howling and blaming everyone including god for the loss of their precious. And what S. kabir and gang did? These so called intellectuals were making videos and articles for foreigners to get sympathy for their political agendas, but not for the victims. It seemed like directing rape scene but not protecting the victim. Problem was they filmed secretly for their foreign godfathers but not for the countrymen to make public awareness.
Yes, Hasina has seen dead bodies---from father, mother to close ones - - - - - - - - but could not see the burned dead bodies of 12 people inside a bus in front of Dhaka Sheraton. Because of her blindness, once in a public meeting she asked for eyes by saying “Eye for Eye”.
I have written above things due to the reply of Mr. Sumon. But these are not directly related with our main topic. Main concern is the contents of the Article. Mr. Sumon, please send your authentic evidence to Nobel Peace Committee as soon as possible for the amendment. If you still do not have that, you may ask S. Kabir to collect them. There is no Khalada-led government now.

hold on bro. u don't even privilleged or allowed to make any comment nor write any bullcrap article abt' bangladesh. bangladesh is doing far better than india where 100000 people still die in famines or plague. brothers, dont get too upset. take it easy....getting your ASS kicked out from the "2007 CRICKET WORLD CUP" is not the end of the world.

Rusty...have you heard about the story about the frog who thought his well was the largest thing ever in the world. That frog and you are in the same boat. I am sorry to say that the only consolation underdeveloped neigboring countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh can claim is a win over Indian in sports especially cricket (but on a careful perusal you can find, its not Bangladesh and Ireland which won but its the Indian Industrialists who won) . Please wake up to this reality before its already to late to realize. You are speaking to a country which is doing 9.4 % annual growth which none of you can never even dream. For your own sake please wake up from this myth about beating India in a foolish sport; that doesnt put food on your plates but a robust economical growth like that of India in all sectors will defintley will.

One cannot expect anything better from a MEAN country like Bangladesh.

How a country could be mean, Anju? What country you come from and how great is your country? Your comment on a nation reflects where you stand as a person and may your god help you.

As your neighboring country, i am afraid about the general knowledge possessed by my Indians friends. Its seems Bangladesh is to be blamed for security and economic problems in India. The easiest to solve a problem is to find the root of the problem, but not blame somebody else for cover-up your fault.
This article is blaming Bangladesh and Pakistan for smuggling weapons to Bangladesh. All the Islamic extremist that were caught recently in Bangladesh revealed that they smuggled their weapons through India and used it to carry out attack on Bangladeshi people.
Regarding immigration issue, The scale of the problem is definitely not large as it is portrayed. I don't know of any bangladeshi that sneaked into India in search of work... most umemployed youth tries to go to malaysia, Indonasia and middle eastern countries for work. Until the last couple of years, our per capita income was very similar to India's. I think both countries have a huge proportion of poor people. The areas bordering the Bangladesh-India border have similar economic opportunities, so there is no preferential advantage of crossing the border.
We acknowledge that lots of smuggling take place both ways. If you come to a Bangladeshi market, you will be stunned by the amount of Indian product in our market. So in my opinion smuggling is a real problem for both countries. Bangladesh being a smaller country suffers more because of smuggling of consumer commodities.
Bangladeshis have two major complains about India: (1) There is a billion dollar trade deficit between India and Bangladesh. (2) inequitable water sharing treaty of ganges.
