Dilip Nachane Vijay Tendulkar influenced an entire generation of playwrights in India and was looked upon as a father figure by veterans of the Marathi theatre such as Amol Palekar, Sriram Lagu, Dilip Kolhatkar etc. His plays were a combination of the Theatre of the Absurd & the Theatre of Cruelty, with often strong existentialist elements. Seared by personal tragedy, he kept up his spirit and commented bravely and sometimes controversially on social issues. The modern generation of playwrights will gain much by a careful study of his plays such as "Sakharam Binder" "Gidhade", "Ghashiram Kotwal", "Baby" etc. Alas, the defining voice of modern Marathi literature will be heard no more.

AfrozAshrafi vijay Tendulkar was a playwright , and an intellectual who saw read and wrote the society of his time over a period of time .Primarily a Marathi writer committed to the evaluation of the temper of the time he lived in and the contemporary vices and contradictions of the social texture . He lived a life marred by personal tragedies as his daughter priya Tendulkar better known as Rajni left very early leaving father in shreds . A writer's life within is always tyrbulent but the personal blues are seen against the backdrop of time . He was an artist who read life and wrote about it with profound impersonal touch and left his mark on the sands of time . Dramas of life , dilemmmas of existence and the cry within all combine to constitute a portrait of a society ridden with inconsistencies and contradictions . Vijay Tendulkar was a sensitive voice who interpreted the thoughts of the time and watched things from a distance .
